Real Talk on Shifting Your Energy When You’re Feeling Down

Have you ever woken up and just felt BLAH?

I know some mornings I wake up and just feel down about my appearance, my weight, my health, or just the general direction my life is heading on any given day.

I drag myself out of bed (lift chair in my case), put on makeup just to try and force myself back to the ‘positive me,’ and wonder:

Is it just me?

Even when you write about mindset, gratitude, and the Law of Attraction, real life happens. You cannot be operating at high-vibe energy 24/7. That isn’t realistic.

Are you ready for some simple but useful things I do to help myself? Let’s get into it!

Hey guys, thanks so much for popping into my little corner of the internet. If you are new here, my name is Amy. I’m the Blogger behind iHeart LOA. I’m so happy that you’re here with me today. This is where we talk about the Law of Attraction, Manifesting, Personal Development & all the Woo-Woo.

I know that it’s hard to work through those feelings sometimes and get past them. But one thing that I am doing right now as I write this post out is realizing that feeling sorry for myself is definitely not helping me.

Things I Do To Help Shift My Energy

1. Give Myself Permission to Feel the Way I’m Feeling

I pause for a moment and just let myself feel the feeling. I observe the emotion. And I remind myself that ‘This too shall pass’. Whether you’re into the Bible or not, that scripture has always helped me. It reminds me that everything in this life is temporary. I feel the feeling, but I don’t wallow in it.

For my more scientific folks who may be reading, there’s something called the 90-Second Rule.

Harvard neuroscientist 1Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor explains in her book ‘My Stroke of Insight’ the actual biological surge of a bad/sad mood only lasts 90 seconds. After that, it’s our own thoughts on a loop keeping the feeling alive.

2. I Shift My Focus Off Myself and Onto Serving Others

My post was originally written back in 2017. (worded differently but pretty much the same)

I realized then (2017) that by sharing what I was going through with my readers— maybe I could help someone else. Maybe someone out there needed to hear what I was saying.

I noticed that when I decided to talk about it, it helped me to work through my feelings of inadequacy. It took the focus off me and put it on possibly helping someone else.

The second I stopped staring at my own insecurities and focused on how I could encourage my readers, the feeling vanished.

I used small acts such as writing an article, replying to comments, or sending a kind text—to break out of my own head.

The science behind why this works— It’s something called 2The Helper’s High.

When you shift your focus from your own stress to helping, serving, or encouraging someone else, your brain immediately triggers the release of dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin while lowering cortisol (the stress hormone).

Basically, you get a hit of dopamine sent to your brain when you help other people. No wonder we love Substack so much, huh? We’re getting little hits of dopamine from helping each other! I’ll take that over any drug any day, won’t you?

3. I Find Motivating Messages To Help Shift My Energy Back To Positive

The last thing you want to add to already feeling down is the extra thought of the energy you’re sending out to the universe. That just adds more stress to an already negative situation.

I don’t know about you, but since learning about the Law of Attraction, I’m always aware of what kind of energy I’m sending out. (Really, that’s a good thing because it means that you are observing the thoughts in your head and can change them instead of dwelling on them. Talk about getting good at mindset work! That’s great!)

How can you change the thoughts floating around in your head?

One of the first things I did was go to Pinterest and look up some inspiring/motivating quotes.

Pinterest is full of awesome quotes that instantly uplift me.

Like these:

“Be Somebody That Makes Everyone Feel Like A Somebody.” ~Robby Novak

“Be the energy that you want to attract.” ~Nikki Rowe

You can also just step outside for a while. Breathe in the air.

Or grab your journal & write down your gratitudes for the day for an instant energy shift.

Scientific Facts:

The Study: 32020 Queen’s University study published in ‘Nature Communications’. Researchers used fMRI technology to detect when a person’s brain transitions from one distinct idea to another (what they called “thought worms”).

The Finding: They found that the average human brain goes through roughly 6,200 individual thoughts per day.

You Have the Power to Shift

You don’t have to stay stuck in the moment just because you started your day there. You can change how you feel simply by changing what you focus on.

When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. ~Dr. Wayne Dyer

It’s okay to not be positive all the time. But remember that you are constantly building your future right this very second through your thoughts and your energy.

You have the power to change your focus. You have the power to shift your reality. And honestly? I think that is pretty damn awesome, don’t you?
